In the heart of Ohio, amid the rolling hills and quiet towns of Geauga County, a group of people came together with a shared mission: to prevent suicide and to give hope to those struggling in silence. This wasn’t just another committee meeting—it was a lifeline.
The coalition was made up of local mental health professionals, community leaders, educators, first responders, and volunteers. Each member brought their own experiences and expertise, united by a single goal: to make sure no one felt they had to face despair alone. They partnered with local agencies and volunteers to check in on people regularly, offer support, and connect them with mental health resources. They even created small, comforting initiatives like sending handwritten notes and hosting social gatherings because sometimes, a simple gesture could remind someone that they mattered. The coalition also hosted training sessions for case managers, teachers, and community members, ensuring that anyone who might encounter someone in crisis knew how to respond safely and effectively. They understood that knowledge was empowerment—and in Geauga County, that empowerment meant lives saved.
Geauga is unique in that there is a mix of both suburban and rural areas with a population that ranges from 95-96,000 people. We are the second-highest in median income as a county, yet large disparities exist that limit access to care for those who need it most. We average one or more suicides per month. Our primary focus is on men and teens and promoting safety, but we prioritize the safety and well-being of all Geauga residents. The Suicide Prevention Coalition provides community education and ongoing training and promotes access to resources. We welcome all community members and partners to join us!
And so, through teamwork, compassion, and tireless dedication, the Geauga County Suicide Prevention Coalition transformed the way the community approached mental health, which has also evolved. We prove that even in quiet towns, even in times of hardship, hope could be cultivated, shared, and sustained—one life at a time. We welcome all community members and partners to join us!
